It's a hit for good reasons; fine writing where Kathryn Stockett is concerned, based on reviews and info I read of her Novel, great script adaptation and direction by Tate Taylor, fine cinematography from Stephen Goldblatt and a cast that delivered superb performances from everyone. The main actors Emma Stone, Octavia Spencer, Viola Davis and Bryce Dallas Howard were convincing and I liked their performances; Bryce Dallas Howard in the unflattering role of Hilly Holbrook was as convincing as the other more affable characters that we will all tend to remember of course. The short scenes with Cicely Tyson playing Constantine were the most moving.
This film is meant to move and inspire; reviews I've read so fare bear this out as do the ratings from the usual sources I consult. The IMDb full Storyline, for those who have not read that, the book or the official site's account, will suffice as setting the expectations. The characters are very well developed and the concept of the story lends itself especially well for that. One hundred and ninety IMDb users have taken the time to write their opinions, in large part if not totally praising the movie for all the obvious reasons. I felt compelled to do the same. It's the first story of its kind, what life was like for African American maids in Mississippi in the early 1960s, from their perspective; they raised white children and were more parent to them then were some of their actual parents. Then these same white children in too many instances, later were their employers and treated them like sh*t. This story needed to be told and now is better late than never. Its originality is what makes it special. I expect there will be many more reviews repeating the message expressed by reviews thus far and I would not be surprised if there wasn't at least several Oscar nominations.
